Interviewed by Lisa Furlong of Dartmouth Alumni Magazine in 2013, Fanning shared an anecdote from his Class Day at Dartmouth, “After I’d been awarded the Barrett Cup, a very old alum congratulated me and said, ‘Winners of the cup either achieve great things or are never heard from again. Good luck.’ ’’
Fanning was the first person to have held senior Presidential appointments in all three military departments. He was also the first openly gay leader of a branch of the U.S. military. He won numerous awards during his service, including being twice awarded the Department of Defense’s Medal for Distinguished Public Service and the Department of the Navy’s Distinguished Public Service Award.
He is now the president and Chief Executive Officer of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA). The Rockefeller Center for Public Policy and the Social Sciences and the Dickey Center for International Understanding co-sponsored a student lunch with Fanning in May 2017.
